With Fall all around us and the holiday season quickly approaching, this is the perfect recipe to share with family and friends. This Apple Strudel is easy, quick, and full of warm fall flavors!

You have been missing out if you are unfamiliar with Apple Strudel. Traditionally, Apple Strudel is made with a paper-thin dough that wraps around warm apples that burst with yummy fall spices. It is hard to beat on deliciousness.

This iconic dessert is considered by many to be the national dish of Austria. Yes, you read that right, Austria. Very often, it gets mistaken for being of German origin. But nowadays you can find it in bakeries all over Europe.

Do I make my own dough or buy it from the store?

I’m all about making everything from scratch. For this recipe, however, I usually buy the dough. Of course, you can make a specific strudel dough from scratch, but for some reason, I like my Apple Strudel best with good old puff pastry.

If a craving strikes, puff pastry works like a charm. And since I still haven’t created the perfect puff pastry recipe that I’m happy with, store-bought puff pastry has to do the trick.

As the strudel bakes, the pastry becomes buttery with perfectly tender and sweet apples. Apple Strudel truly is the perfect fall treat!

How to serve Apple Strudel?

I highly recommend eating your Apple Strudel warm; it makes a big difference in taste, and the fall spices come through even more beautifully when warm!

Let the whole strudel cool for a few minutes after baking, dust it with powdered sugar, then cut it into 2-3 inch slices (4-5cm). Serve it with vanilla sauce, a scoop of ice cream, or heavy whipped cream for additional goodness.

You can warm up leftovers (if you have any) on a plate in the microwave for a few seconds.

E Guete, (Bon appétit)!! Don’t forget to share some pictures with me and tell me how you liked this Apple Strudel. It would make my day if you tag @mirjamskitchenyodel on Instagram, share on Facebook, or pin on Pinterest.

Ingredients

  • 2 Puff pastry sheets
  • 500 g Apples I use Gala
  • 150 g Raisins
  • 100 g Granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp Vanilla extract
  • 2 tsp Ground cinnamon
  • 1 Lemon juice
  • 60 g Hazelnuts shredded or almonds
  • 80 g Breadcrumbs
  • 70 g Butter melted
  • 1 Egg whisked, for egg wash
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

Filling:

  • Line a baking sheet with silicon mats or parchment paper. Preheat the oven to 390°F or 200°C.
  • Add the raisins, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and lemon juice to a large mixing bowl and combine well. Let them sit for half an hour.
  • Meanwhile, wash and peel the apples, cut them into 1/4inch cubes, add them to the raisins and mix well. Set aside.
  • Mix the breadcrumbs, shredded hazelnuts (or almonds), and melted butter together and stir them into the apples until evenly coated.

    Assemble:

    • Take the puff pastry sheet, and with a rolling pin, roll the sheet out a little thinner and bigger to approximately 30x40cm. This recipe makes two Apple Strudels, so you will need both puff pastry sheets!
    • Spoon half of the apple filling lengthwise in the middle of the puff pastry sheet. Make sure you distribute them evenly, leaving room to fold the puff pastry on each side.
    • Then crack one egg into a small bowl and whisk well, this will be the egg wash.
    • Brush one edge of the puff pastry (lengthwise) with egg wash. Fold the side without egg wash over the apples first, then the side with the egg wash.
    • Flip the Strudels over so that the ends are at the bottom, and place them on the prepared baking sheet. Brush them with egg wash. Then take a sharp bread knife and cut slits 1/2 inch apart (1.5-2cm) along the Strudel.
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes until golden brown.
    • Cool for 15-20 minutes, then lightly dust with powdered sugar. Serve warm with vanilla sauce, ice cream, or heavy whipped cream.
