This is the best homemade Apple Cinnamon Crisp you will ever eat! With a sweet, caramelized apple filling and a perfect brown sugar crumbly topping, this comforting dessert is a crowd-pleaser. It is easy and incredibly delicious, AND gluten-free! Serve it warm with a scoop of ice cream for an irresistible treat!

We had a few friends over a while back; one is on a gluten-free diet.

I ALWAYS make a dessert when we have guests for dinner; this is pretty much expected of a former pastry chef, don’t you agree?

So I had to brainstorm to figure out a gluten-free dessert. Because I think a lot of people (me included, I’m guilty) believe gluten-free desserts can not live up to the taste of regular gluten-heavy desserts.

But I’m so excited to tell you that this sweet treat did!!! This Apple Cinnamon Crisp is by far the best I have ever eaten. And it has since become one of our favorite desserts!

It takes just minutes to make! The smell that fills the whole house when it is in the oven is pure happiness, and the flavor is unmatched. Pair it with a scoop of ice cream, and you will feel the magic!

Gluten-free oats

Did you know that oats are naturally gluten-free?

But, even though oats are gluten-free, you want to make sure there is a label on the packaging that says explicitly “Gluten-free.” Because if there is no label, the “regular” oats may have come in contact with gluten-containing grains such as wheat, barley, or ray. Either at the farm, in storage, or during transportation.

Make this Apple Cinnamon Crisp ahead of time (if needed)

If you are on a tight schedule and want to prep your dessert beforehand, this Apple Cinnamon Crisp is perfect!

Make the apple filling as described in the recipe below but add 1 tbsp of Lemon juice to it. This will prevent the apples from browning too much. Cover the bowl with the filling and place it in the refrigerator for up to 24h.

You can also make the brown sugar crumble ahead. Store it in an airtight container and place it in the refrigerator until you can assemble the Apple Cinnamon Crisp.

When ready to bake, pour the apple filling into a 9×9 inch oven-safe dish, sprinkle the crispy topping over it, and bake as directed.

Tips to make the perfect apple crisp:

➙ Peel the apples!! I like to use my vegetable peeler to peel them; it works like a charm! Of course, you could leave the skin on, but removing it makes for a much smoother texture.

➙ Cut the apples into wedges and dice each wedge into smaller pieces! Uniform apple pieces will give you an evenly baked dessert, so cut them all to about the same size.

➙ If you don’t have oat flour, you can add rolled oats to a blender and blend until they resemble a fine floury texture.

➙ After mixing the melted butter with the crumble topping, place the topping in the refrigerator until needed. This will harden the butter slightly, and you can break it into perfect chunks (with a spoon or your fingers) to add on top of the apples when needed.

➙ You can also add cranberries or raisins to the apple filling, or if you like some extra crunch, add nuts.

    Instructions

    Crumble topping

    • Carefully melt the butter in the microwave on the soft/melt setting and set aside.
    • Mix the rolled oats, oat flour, sugar, cinnamon, baking powder, salt, and melted butter in a medium-sized bowl.
    • Once thoroughly combined, place the bowl with the crumble in the refrigerator until needed.

      Apple filling:

      • Grease a 9×9 inch baking dish and preheat the oven to 375°F or 190°C.
      • Then peel, slice, and cube the apples and place them into a big mixing bowl.
      • Add the dark brown sugar, melted butter, milk, oat flour, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt. Mix well.
      • Pour the apple mixture into the greased baking dish and level it with a spoon.
      • Take the crumble topping out of the refrigerator. The butter hardened, but that is ok. Use a spoon to loosen it up and break it into smaller chunks.
      • Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apple filling.
      • Bake for 35-40 minutes until the filling is bubbly and the topping golden brown.
      • Let the Apple Cinnamon Crisp sit for 20 minutes before eating.
      • Serve it with a scoop (or two) of your favorite ice cream. Enjoy!
