With only two ingredients, you can make perfectly creamy yogurt at home. It’s super simple and so good for you, without all the unnecessary added sugars that come with store-bought yogurt. I call that a win!

All you need is some good-quality milk, about half a cup of plain yogurt to use as a starter culture, and a little bit of patience. It’s that easy!

Yogurt maker

This yogurt recipe calls for a yogurt maker. I know that there are quite a few other ways to make yogurt. Some people like to make it in the slow cooker, some use the oven, and others put the milk with starter culture outside (if they live in a hot climate).

I prefer the yogurt maker. It makes the whole process so easy, plus the yogurt maker will provide a steady temperature for the fermentation to occur. On top of all that, I don’t have to worry about blocking the oven for several hours.

Flavors

If I have some extra time on my hands, I like to make an easy fruit puree and put that at the bottom of the yogurt glasses.

Most of the time, though, I use chocolate powder. It’s quick and gives the yogurt an excellent chocolaty taste.

For fruit puree: Add 1 cup of the fruit of your choice into a small saucepan. Add 1 tbsp of water. Bring it to a boil and let the fruit simmer until fruit juice has reduced and thickened up, about 5-10min. Scoop the desired amount into each yogurt glass, and voila, you’ll have a simple fruit yogurt once done.

My boys love this homemade yogurt! Not just for breakfast, it’s also a very popular snack at our house. They add scoops of Homemade Granola – Müesli to the yogurt; it adds the perfect crunch! The chocolate powder version is their favorite. My Mom likes to make it that way, and this tradition has continued 🥰

I also use the yogurt in oatmeal, as a sour cream substitute, and in salad dressings, to name a few.

  • Cool the milk down to 108 Fahrenheit (42 Celsius), use a candy or regular food thermometer. To speed up the process, put the whole pot in a cold or even icy water bath.

Prep Yogurt Glasses

  • While waiting, put the starter yogurt into a big bowl. Set aside.
  • Prepare your yogurt glasses. If you want just plain yogurt, leave them empty. If you like to add a flavor, put some fruit puree or chocolate powder in the bottom of the glasses. ***

Fill Milk into Yogurt Glasses

  • Once the milk is cooled down to 108 °F, pour about a quarter of it into the bowl with the yogurt starter and whisk it up. Add the rest of the milk to the milk-starter mixture and mix it for a few seconds.
  • Pour the milk mixture carefully into the prepared yogurt glasses.

  • Put the glasses carefully into the yogurt maker. Put the lid on the yogurt maker and let the glasses rest for 10-12 hours.
  • Once they are done, put the individual lids on the yogurt glasses and put them in the refrigerator to cool. It's best to let them chill overnight.

Notes

*I like to use whole milk; the yogurt gets thicker and creamier that way. But if you prefer low-fat milk, make sure you leave the glasses in the yogurt maker for at least 12 hours to achieve a thick yogurt.
** Plain Greek yogurt works great, but you can use any plain yogurt, though a good quality yogurt is preferred!

➙ I bought my yogurt maker about five years ago, and for some reason, I can’t seem to find it online anymore. It still works wonderfully. Here is a link to a Yogurt Maker I know is excellent, too. Since it only has the portion glasses and no big jar like mine does, you’d need to half my recipe.
