What kind of Chocolate works best?
You want to use good quality chocolate! I’m biased, but Swiss Chocolate is the way to go! I used this Lindt Chocolate Bar. You can choose any flavor you like and make it unique to your liking.
How to shape them?
I used heart molds and firmly pressed the chocolate filling in them, but you certainly don’t have to make them heart-shaped. You can also roll them into small balls. If you do that, I suggest putting the chocolate filling in the refrigerator for about half an hour before you form them. It will be a lot easier to roll them between your hands if the filling is chilled and hardened; otherwise, you will end up with a melting, sticky mess.
Finishing touch
There are lots of different ways to finish and decorate these Chocolate Hearts. I coated mine with chocolate and added different toppings to it like; red sprinkles, chocolate sprinkles, a red heart & chocolate dots, and on one kind, I used the melted chocolate to drizzle it over the hearts.
If you don’t want to coat them with chocolate, you can also just roll them in powdered sugar, shredded nuts, sprinkles, or whatever you feel like.
I live in a smaller town, and certain things are hard to find; for example, couverture (a specific type of chocolate for tempering). I could have ordered it online but I didn’t feel like it. So I cheated a little and bought dipping chocolate. All you have to do is melt it and dip the hearts in it. Of course, it won’t give you the perfectly nice shine couverture would give you, but since these candies are supposed to be quick and easy, dipping chocolate works just fine.
But even with dipping chocolate, you have to be careful and don’t overheat it. Make sure to melt the chocolate at a low temperature in the microwave or a double boiler. It has to be just slightly warm to the touch to give you the best results.

Ingredients
- 125 g Butter softened
- 125 g Powdered sugar
- 1 Tbsp Cocoa Powder
- 375 g Lindt Chocolate melted
For Decoration
- Sprinkles
- Dipping Chocolate
- Heart sprinkles
Instructions
- Create a double boiler by putting some water in a medium-size pan and placing a mixing bowl on top of the pan (it should be big enough to touch the water slightly). Turn on the stove and warm up the water; make sure it doesn’t start boiling. Next, put the Chocolate into the mixing bowl and slowly melt it, stirring occasionally. It’s crucial that no water, not even a tiny drop, gets into the chocolate, or the chocolate will become hard and lumpy – in short: unusable!
- In a medium-size mixing bowl, beat the butter until soft and lighter in color with a hand or stand mixer.
- Add the powdered sugar and cocoa powder to the butter and mix until well combined.
- Pour the melted chocolate into the butter-sugar mixture and beat until well incorporated.
- Take the Heart molds and, with your hands, firmly press the chocolate filling in it to have it flush with the mold.
- Refrigerate the mold for a couple of hours.
- Melt the Dipping Chocolate in the microwave on the defrost or low power setting or in a double boiler.
- Take the hearts out of the molds.
- Take one heart at a time and dip it in the chocolate. I used a fork to take it back out of the chocolate. Once you have the chocolate-covered heart sitting on your fork, you want to get the excess chocolate off by tapping the fork on the side of the bowl. The chocolate will drip down the sides of the heart. Once it stops dripping, place the heart on parchment paper and add sprinkles or other decorations. Make sure you add the decorations before the chocolate has firmed up to make them stick well to the candy.
